Jonathan Lane was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He started music in a public-school music program playing bass. He has an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Arizona State University. His Master’s Degree is in Double Bass performance from the University of Michigan. Additional education includes a Summer Fellowship at Northwestern in Chicago and numerus conducting and orchestra education workshops. Mr. Lane has taught elementary through college music for over 35 years. He was orchestra director at Shawnee Mission East High School for 31 years where he also taught middle school. In that time, the SM East orchestra performed as an Honor Orchestra at; Chicago Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music Educator National Conference (MENC), the American String Teachers National (ASTA) convention and Kansas Music Educators Association conference. He has also been a guest clinician and given talks at the Mid- West Band and Orchestra clinic, Missouri Music Teachers Association and ASTA. He has also published articles and the ASTA magazine and the Instrumentalist. He is a contributor to the GIA series of books “Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra”. Mr. Lane has been on the faculty of many summer music camps including the Fort Hays and Blue Lake summer music camps. Jon Lane is active as a professional double bass player and teacher. He keeps a private bass studio in the Kansas City area. Former students have gone on the top music schools like Indiana University and Julliard, some have gone on to play in the Hong Kong and the Wichita Symphonies. He has 3 grown children, two granddaughters, he also plays tennis and does yoga. Lane is presently Artists Director of the Westwood Ensemble and orchestra clinician for KC Strings.
